A while ago there was a note that said armor wasn't worth much, if a Xorn
hits you he is going to knock you down 20 hits, or something like that.
well I just finished a game with -8 armor class, believe it or not.
I was given a +3 plate mail and found 8 EA's. Well Nothing stopped me.
(except dragons, i sort of left them sleep...) I was in a room with
an umber hulk, wraith and purple worm. and survived. i just kept wailing
on keys hoping i would hit the right things and finally killed them all.
Needless to say it doesnt give one immunity to danger as i was killed on
level 29 trapped between two purple worms.

Xorn's can't hit you with a -8 armor class. In fact, the only things
that can are Dragons and Purple Worms. See, the way it works is that
monsters have an "intrinsic experience level." When the hit roll is
figured, it uses the IEL in a way such that if monster is exp. lev. X,
then it cannot hit you if your armor class is -X. Xorn's, Umber Hulks,
Vampires, and Invisible Stalkers all are at 8. Dragons are 10 and
Worms are 15! A Dragon, however, can hit you with flame, the
chances just are reduced by better armor. (Note that Rust Monsters
are level 5, so once you have AC -5, they can't hit it, so you win).

After dungeon level 26, however, the monsters get one more exp. lev.
for each level below 26. So X,U,I and V will have a 1/20 (or maybe
18, I'm not sure...) chance of hitting you at 27, 2/20 at 28, and so
on. Even in my most extreme cheating, I've never been able to get
below AC -15, so P's are the ones that hit. Of course, and adventurer
like this is so moby that he can win easily, so we try diving into
the dungeon and seeing how far we can get an still make it back out.

In Rogue 3.6, there is a bug that allows you to get any AC you desire.
I once played a game at AC -9. It was soooooooo boring....

I just won a game of superrogue with an armor class of -13 (+17 banded mail).
What made the game interesting, though, was my +45 +36 bastard sword.

A friend and I cheated on armor class (V. 5.3) in order to create what we
thought was an optimal "diver": the goal was to try to get down to level
100 before dying. As the previous writer said, the problem is that
monsters get intrinsically more dangerous as you get deeper. As we went
past level 50, for example (by this time strength was up to the max and
uncheated weapon level was at +14,+8), even snakes were formidable
monsters... and this is against AC -13 or so. Hence polymorphing becomes
less valuable.

We made it down to level 62 before getting Wormed.

So, the challenge is this: how do you equip an adventurer to get as deep
as possible? Has anybody gotten deeper?

I know of one person who reached level 69 before he died of
starvation: At that level
 a) It is next to impossible to kill a monster without magic.
 b) he was IMMEDIATELY surrounded and unable to move.
    (or kill monsters)
:. He droped a scare monster and died of starvation while trying
to kill....
