To whom it may concern,
	I threw a haste monster stick and, landing upon something
  that I'd previously thrown, initiated the message that the
  "crossbow" vanished as it hit the ground. That is,
  
  	staff of haste monster = crossbow (if thrown)

It gets better.  If you're wielding a staff of striking and read an "enchant
weapon" scroll, the message is, "Your long sword glows blue for a moment."
