The following is a few questions from a rogue beginner. Please answer her in news. Thank You. 1. How and why do you fight with bow and arrow? 2. How do you go back up levels? 3. How do you play the different versions of rogue? A Rogue Beginner *********************************

1. Bows and arrows are used to kill leprechauns and nymphs, which if approached too closely will steal some of your treasure. To use: a. wield the bow b. throw arrows in the desired direction (you should be at least 4 dots away for maximal distance-protection). c. after the deed is done, be sure to wield your original weapon again. 2. Going up levels is only possible after retrieving the Amulet of Yendor. Good luck on that! Dave Fiedler {zeppo, astrovax, philabs}!infopro!dave

In Rogue 5.2, it rarely pays to wield a bow. Arrows thrown without wielding a bow do almost as much damage, and are almost as accurate. Not having to switch weapons often gives you an extra shot. Crossbow bolts are even better than arrows. It almost never pays to wield a crossbow, because of the risk that it might be cursed. On the first two dungeon levels, if you really want to stay alive, consider using arrows on hobgoblins or maybe EVERYTHING, until you have over 25 hit points. I use arrows on ants, especially at the first few levels. If ants can't get next to you, they can't sting you. Occasionally it pays to kill a purple fungus with arrows (takes a lot of arrows), just to avoid getting stuck to the fungus. This is a lot of fun, because the fungus never moves. In a large room with a sleeping purple worm, it often pays to shoot arrows at the worm, to soften it up so you can kill it and get that next experience level. If you are confused by a hulk, or by a potion, you can throw arrows accurately even though you cannot strike accurately. Thrown arrows can hit a monster on a square adjacent to your rogue. - Toby Robison allegra!eosp1!robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison princeton!eosp1!robison (NOTE! NOT McMillan; Robison.)

An interesting thing about arrows in rogue vers. 9 and 8.4 (the one's that I have access to) is that you can throw arrows around corners also zap with wands/staffs. For example. U# @ # A zap (command 'p') at direction 'y' will get the Umber Hulk. Likewise throwing an arrow at 'y' will also attack the Umber Hulk. This works in doors also. Great for getting into treasure rooms when there is a rust monster right in front of you. (take your armor off (if you have to) and throw arrows around the corner at the rest of the monsters!) Arrows thrown without wielding > a bow do almost as much damage, and are almost as accurate. Note that in 5.3, this is no longer true. Throwing an arrow does little damage, shooting an arrow from a bow now does the proper amount of damage. Joe Kalash kalash@berkeley ucbvax!kalash
