I built gcc-1.36 on the DECStation 3100 and did not observe what you report. The only differences I saw were in the 5th byte of each .o file, which must have something to do with a timestamp. I wonder how our configurations differ. I found I did have to link /lib/crt0.o1.31 to /lib/crt0 to get to to go through any of stage1 or stage2. Also I had to remove -g from the CFLAGS line recommended for stage1 and stage2 because apparently on the MIPS machines, symbolic debuggin is not supported :-(.
