[net.games.rogue] Trying to tell what a scroll does...

What does it mean when you read a scroll and a message like
"You hear maniacal laughter in the distance" or
"You feel as if someone is watching over you"  comes up?
I'm only an occasional player but I have reached below the 20th level
on several occasions, but I haven't been able to come up with an
explanation.   Does it mean that I read it at the wrong time
or that it's useless or what?? Replies would be greatly appreciated.

The messages when you read scrolls are hints about their functions.

Maniacal Laughter: you read a scroll of monster scare. you're not supposed to
	read those. if u drop them on the floor a monster won't walk over
	it.
Some-one Watching Over You: a scroll of uncurse. u will be able to remove
	any curses items (ring, armour) that u are wearing.
