References: My wife and I have won Rogue 3.6 and 5.2 many times. We have won with many different combinations of things. For an ideal romp, I'd like something like this by dungeon level 20: Strength of 22. 90+ hitpoints. Rings of +2 protection, search and stealth. A couple of wands (slow monster, polymorph, light, lightning). Scrolls of scare monster, hold monster, confuse monster. An improved two-handed sword, and lots of food. Armor better than AC 0. But seriously, you need very few of these in any one game to win, and many combinations can work. You can even win with: A +1, +3 mace; strength of 18, a ring of stealth, a scroll of scare monster, 75 hitpoints, AC 3, a wand of light and a wand of slow monster. Lots of hitpoints substitute for other things, but can you win and finish a game with less than 70 hitpoints. The rule of thumb is the obvious one: You either have good hitpoints, weapons and armor, or you have compensating magic. Of all the items I have named, the single most valuable (in my style of play) is probably the ring of stealth. - Toby Robison allegra!eosp1!robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison princeton!eosp1!robison
