[gnu.gcc.bug] gcc on the Iris 4D/80 workstation

pmorris@BBN.COM (phil morris) (10/19/89)

To whom it may concern:

I am attempting to install gcc version 1.36.0 onto an SGI Iris 4D/80
workstation running IRIX System V Release 4D1-3.147. I use the command:

	config.gcc iris

to generate the links to the various files. I then modify the Makefile
to use the line ALLOCA = alloca.c (but I do not change the INSTALL
statement as the Iris does have the install command). When I type "make",
everything makes OK (except that there are three warnings about assigning
incompatible pointer types), but then when I use the statement:

	make CC=stage1/gcc CFLAGS="-O -Bstage1/"

(note that I omit the -g flag as it is not supported for the MIPS chip).
When the re-compile via GCC gets to the line:

	stage1/gcc -O -Bstage1/ -I. -I. -I./config -c insn-peep.c

my whole workstation hangs, and error messages start appearing in the
console window, of the type:

	ips0d0s0: error csr=0x4040 bn=16992 statcode=83 recovered,
		    errorcode=0x1

(Unfortunately, my sysadmin person does not have any idea what this
means). This message will keep repeating until I kill the GCC compile
by repeating typing cntrl-C. Another symptom is that the disk is in
continuous motion and all other processes slow down so much as to be at
a dead stop. If you have any ideas on how to resolve this, we would
greatly appreciate it. Our ultimate goal is to install g++, but of
course, we must take it one step at a time.

Thank you for any guidance,

Phil Morris
