If you have been running the game for quite a while and saved it some 16 times, you will hit that limit. It is present in all the versions of rogue I have seen. There may well be other bugs that can cause the phenomenon but this is one guaranteed way to run off the end of a long (i.e. good) game. Killing the process will make rogue attempt to create a save file but this is not always successful and may create similar situations where you can start but not run. John Spraggs mprvaxa!spraggs

TAKE THIS and gobble if you can ... Somewhere at level 16+ all hell broke lose .... first, the game did not respond to directional commands, then it seemed to think that I wanted to save the game and PLOUGH I received the shell prompt. The file was saved alright, but when I restarted, I got to see the old maze, and, surprise, the prompt "File-name:" and then, no matter what I typed, I got kicked back to the shell, and the file was saved again. What is going on here? I have seen this behavior before, many months ago, but this time I had all the right equipment to become a winner, SNIFF. Sooooo, someone better give me a tip how to fix or avoid this, please. Could it be that a ^C (my RUBOUT) has that effect ? werner@ut-ngp (desperation city)
