[net.games.rogue] How about some discussion?

The Scroll of Genocide is gone. Ken decided that there was no real decision
with a genocide scroll (kill Umber Hulks), so he tossed it. There is now a
scroll of protect armor.

There doesn't seem to be much discussion on this group, so here's
an attempt to start one:

Someone recently mentioned having a "good" game with all of the
items needed to win. What do you consider necessary for a "good"
game? If you've won a game, what items were essential for the
win? When do you decide that a game is "bad" and hence
offers a poor chance for a win?

Also, what version do you play and what has been your best score?

Responses to this group, please.

Well Ok here it goes.

A good game, in my opinion, is one in which you beat your own score.
You don't have to win in order to have a good game (that is a fantastic
game). I myself have only reached as high as level 24 only to be
swept away by an Umber Hulk.
In my opinion, I think a great armor class, and a ring of stealth
really make the game, but I am extremely happy when I get a two handed
sword. A scroll of genocide is always nice (nice, it's GREAT) but then
comes the decision of which monster to get rid of. I usually toss
up about either xorns or hulks, only because if you are really having
trouble with anything less, you'll never get to meet the hard-hitters.
I think I know how to handle dragons and hulks, but I have always
had trouble with xorns. Any ideas?

I almost won a game (5.2), but I got rattled and messed up. On the way
UP with the amulet, I had TWO scrolls of scare monster; I figured I
couldn't lose. But I got confused by an Umber Hulk, and was REALLY
CONFUSED -- I didn't drop the scare monster like I should have. Like I
said, I *almost* won.

What saved my *ss more than once in that game was something I
think is the most useful item: a ring of regeneration. That's the item
that'll get you to Experience Level 8 with minimum hassle, and it makes
you *feel* great to run away from a Xorn and gain one HP each step.

Basically, I find that my "good" games come down to one basic
thing: a really good Party Room on a low level (1, 2, or 3 if
you survive Ants). Rings like Rustproofing and Retain Strength are
nice. . .

Somebody mentioned (in another note) that you don't need many
scrolls of Identify to win -- you can tell what things are by
experimenting. But I tell you: if there's one thing I hate, it's being
weakened and drinking *increase* strength before drinking *restore*
strength. So I use my Identify scrolls on potions until I get one of
those two, then on staves and rings (at high levels when cursed rings
and nasty staves can do you in).

As to the scroll of genocide, it is my opinion that the U's have to
go. While the X is a matter of hack'n'slash, the U has its magic that
can very easily defeat you.

A question for the gurus in regards to 9.0: With a scroll of
creation, you can create anything that you wish, including another
scroll of creation. When that scroll is created, between one and
three were created? If so, you could create an infinite number, by
using the first to create one to three, then the one to three to
create n more, and so on, and so on. The reason I ask this is because
I used a scroll of creation to make a scroll of genocide to use on a U
that had me confused and almost dead. The result of the creation was
two scrolls of genocide.

As to what I would like on the trip all the way down, I think the most
important things are a high constitution, so you get the hit points to
be able to go toe-to-toe with the heavy hitters without having to burn
all the magic, and a good armor class. By the time you get down that
low, you should have the rings and other magic that you need. The
keys are in the negative armor class and hit points.

While we're on the subject of Scroll of Genocide. Does anyone know if Scroll
of Genocide still exists in Rogue 5.3? I have never seen it.
