It's been my experience (mostly with 5.2, where I have won 4 or 5 games) that the most useful things are: [1] Good armor (e.g. plate mail with enchantments) [2] A two-handed sword with enchantments [3] A ring of stealth If you can genocide U's, your chances are much improved.
