The staff of cancellation is useful for fighting things like N's,L's and maybe a few of the other creatures with magical attacks. Give them a good shot with the staff and they're just like anything else (i.e. no more magical attack). Does anyone know how many creatures this works on? Anyone now what really happens when you read the scroll that gives you the message "You have a feeling of loss"?

The scroll that says "You have a strange feeling of loss" is an
enchant scroll read when there is nothing to enchant.

This sounds like the Rogue 5.3 problem that I mentioned a while back: I have NEVER gotten a staff of cold, fire, or lightning to hit anything (except me!). Anyone know why these wands no longer work? Dan Reynolds <dan@ut-ngp.ARPA>

1. Don't waste the staff of cancellation on MEDUSA. They confuse you, if at all, the first time they see you. 2. the scroll with the message " you sense a feeling of loss " is the HOLD MONSTER scroll, used to freeze the monsters around you.

Well, they work just the normal way. But you need to have good experience to be able to use them effectively. In any case, there is NO use trying to use them before level 13 (i.e. TROLLS).

What do you mean "they work the normal way?" I was ninth level with 2000 experience on the 18th level of the dungeon (maybe only 16th before I gave up on the cold staff) and they NEVER worked. I used them about 10 times! And, by the way, rogue 5.3 DEFINITELY has Medusas; I met one (and that was the last thing I met) on the 18th level. Help with cold and lightning staves!!! I have gotten Rogue 5.3 wand of cold to work. I don't know what the criteria are; maybe you have to have a certain amount of experience?

I've found that these staffs work better at short distances, like two or three spaces. A good spot to use them is if there are two monster chasing you, since missing the first will almost certainly score a hit on the second. Another good situation to use them is if the monster is wounded and begins to run away, since that puts the bugger in the ideal 2-3 spaces situation. Bob "just won one yesterday" Lied

TO USE THESE STAVES YOU MUST BE WITHIN 5 SPACES OF THE TARGET MONSTER, POINT IT AT THE MONSTER AND LET IT RIP. YOU MAY MISS. IT IS A RANDOM FUNCTION.
