A scroll which comes up with the words : " You have a feeling of loss ". This is actually a Gold Detector, and if there is gold at that level, it'll show it , else it'll put out the above message.

That might be true for some versions of Rogue, but in 5.3, there isn't a Scroll of Gold Detection. You can still get this message in several ways: - by reading a scroll of enchant armor or a scroll of protect armor when you aren't wearing armor - by reading a scroll of hold monster when there aren't any monsters around - by reading a scroll of enchant weapon when you aren't wielding a weapon Does anyone know of other ways? <sacrifice> I thought a scroll that printed "You feel a sense of loss" was an enchant weapon (or armor, I forget exactly which one) when you weren't wielding a weapon at the time the scroll was read. -- From the Random Fingers of -- Ray Chen {allegra | ihnp4 | mhuxi}!princeton!down!tilt!chenr "It's amazing what a thousand monkeys and a few typewriters can accomplish..."

Very rarely in the game is a person without armor and weapon, so I presume that "A feeling of loss" - scroll will not , in all probability, be anything to do with enchanting either of them. I still feel it's to do with no gold being left on that level. Any decisive statements from anybody ?

My list says that it originates from the Enchant Weapon scroll without holding a weapon. From my experience, that is the only time I get it.

No, detecting gold when there is none yields the message "You feel a strong pull downward" (you detect the gold on the next level. The explanations for "sense of loss" are correct. Life sucks, but at least I can still win at rogue, Bob Lied ihnp4!ihlts!lied

#R:ut-sally:-179400:iuvax:9800017:000:641 iuvax!apratt Apr 8 20:12:00 1984 This may or may not be "authoritative", but it is from long experience with Versions 3.4 (?) and 5.2: "You feel a pull downward" is from a Gold Detection scroll when there is no gold left on the level. As for "being without weapon or armor" being rare, that's not what the writer said. When you are not WEARING any armor, and read "Enchant Armor", or you are not WIELDING a weapon, and read "Enchant Weapon", you will get the "strange sense of loss." While the latter is highly uncommon, the former happens all the time, like on levels 9-16 when you haven't found any leather armor. -- Allan Pratt ...ihnp4!inuxc!iuvax!apratt

In 8.4 and 9.0 the "feeling of loss" message comes when you read enchant weapon and aren't wielding a weapon (and possibly other causes too). The message you get when you attempt to detect gold and there is no gold left on the level is "You feel a pull downward." -- Peter Fales (Please reply to the address below - my machine gets mail but not news) UUCP: ...ihnp4!iwlc7!psfales Work: Bell Labs IW-1Z243 W: (312) 979-7784 H: (312) 355-4254

I have gotten the "feeling of loss" message when I have tried to enchant a protected item. By analogy, I would guess that if you are not wearing or wielding, you would also get it.

The message YOU FEEL A PULL DOWNWARD is the message you get when a scroll of gold detection doesn't find any on the current level. I believe the message seen (YOU FEEL AT A LOSS) is from the enchant something scrolls. Russ Sehnoutka AT&T BL Naperville, Ill. ihu1e!genesis

#R:ut-ngp:-48000:smu:25400019:000:323 smu!clardy Apr 16 16:17:00 1984 correction: for the case when you read an enchant weapon, but aren't wielding one, the message is 'you feel a stange sense of loss, then it passes' for the case when you read a hold monster, but there aren't any monsters around, the message is 'you feel a strange sense of loss' this is from the source code.
