I just had an interesting experience in Rogue 5.3. I stepped on an orc!

I had a funny experience lately,too : I quaffed some green potion by mistake, and funny things started happening: I had a roomful of stuff, ALL CHANGING as I moved: one ring went through 8 transitions as I moved towards it- ring->gold->potion->staff->staircase(!)-> etc. etc. Even monsters changed their forms. Will someone please tell me what this potion was? What the remedy is?( I got killed shortly afterward attacking what I thought was a bat but turned out to be a centaur!!) Shankar Unni

You quaffed a "potion of hallucination". The normal messages also are usually altered when you are hallucinating.

It's a potion of hallucination, you quaffed. Takes about 40-80 moves for the effect to wear off. You can also try quaffing a potion of healing to cure it, but I'm not too sure. Didn't your mother ever tell you not to drink strange things unless you knew what they were ? :-)

This behavior is a BUG and has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you may also be hallucinating. All you have to do is get between an orc and a hunk of gold and rest until he hops on your back. This "feature" was brought up in this same news group about two or three months back. Its behavior is regular and well-mis-defined. The interesting thing is that, with the orc on your back, you can carry the him to the gold. However, when you step on the gold, the rogue gets the gold and the orc gives up his transportation. hpda!eric

#R:uwvax:-19900:smu:25400026:000:364 smu!clardy Apr 16 16:46:00 1984 ***SPOILER*** You drank some LSD (potion of hallucination), it lasts for approx. 250 turns in version 5.3, and can be cured by drinking a potion of extra- healing. Personally I drink them on lower levels to liven up the game. By the time I get deeper, it has worn off. Be warned, some of the messages for identifying potions are changed (consistently).
