The best way to deal with Venus Flytraps(5.3)/Violet Fungi(5.2) if you have lots of arrows or darts is to stand one square away and throw them. These beasties don't move. Until they hit you once, you are not held by them. Remember, the damage increases with time. The first hit from an F takes 0. Each subsequent hit takes the previous number +1. Each miss takes the previous number of hits, but not +1. So after you've taken half a dozen hits, you *know that unless you kill it instantly you will lose 6-7 points next shot. Don't mess with them until you're strong enough. Dave Sherman (Magnifibeast) Toronto -- {allegra,cornell,decvax,ihnp4,linus,utzoo}!utcsrgv!dave

(In an experaimental mood, I once fired 27 arrows into one, no effect.) What does work is quaffing a potion of confuse monster, then fighting it. You win every time, with little (usually no) damage to yourself. Sensible, as a confused plant can't defend itself, or run. Of course, you have to have the potion...

<no, no, not that !!!> Why don't you just beat on it, hand-to-hand? I've never met a flytrap that nasty. By then, I'm usually more worried about the ur-viles, griffins, and medusas. Besides, unless you're up to your ears in throwable weapons, it's probably better to save them for the *really* nasty monsters. Ditto with the magic. Much more fun to beat on a confused griffin than a confused flytrap.
