[#############U@M##############] <-- monster to play and mate in 2 Here is the answer to the questions about the meanings of some messages (guaranteed to be true for Rogue 5.3): - "strange sense of loss" can be produced by these three scrolls: hold monster enchant weapon waterproof armour - "you have a strange feeling for a moment, then it passes" caused by: detect magic potion see monster potion - "you hear a high pitched humming noise" is, of course, an aggravate monster scroll, which causes everybody on the level to wake up and go after you. - "this potion tastes like slimemold juice" is less obviously a potion of see invisible, which lasts about as long as blindness or hallucination does. - Although the messages you get whilst hallucinating are sometimes obscure, I think that they're too amusing to spoil (and can be inferred from cross referencing with the above anyway) I found it a rather interesting comment on the game-philosophy of the authors when Ken Arnold corrected one of my misconceptions: I had always thought that the "faint cry of anguish" from a create monster scroll was a monster materializing in solid rock and dying horribly. I similarly thought that "maniacal laughter in the distance" when you read a scare monster scroll was one or more of the monsters on the level laughing at their narrow escape. But, NooooOOOO!! Wrongo, bozo breath! It turns out (according to Ken) that the laughter and the sobs both come from the implementers, who are bummed that you escaped their create monster trap, or (respectively) delighted that they tricked you into reading something that would have helped you! Talk about a paranoid game, they ARE out to get you!!! And finally: to all of you out there with an interest in, or an actual copy of the rogue source code for ANY version of rogue, I have seen copyright notices all the way back to at LEAST version 2.6 in 1980, so shame on you all. Go read the current discussion on copyrights and ethics and piracy going on in net.general, and be ashamed. They've done a superb job, and should be encouraged, not ripped off. - Sir Dougie the Fierce "Damn the Dragons! Full Speed Ahead!"

In our version, phasing allows you to walk through the solid rock. Collecting a bunch of create monster scrolls and reading them while in between rooms can be most delightful. While no exp. points are awarded, the "cries of anguish in the distance" do much for a boost in morale. From a half-crazed sadistic rogue player
