Another vote for "fix the bug". The circumstances: just cruising along on ~15th level while I was 9th level with ~60hp and a good selection of stuff (+3/+1 two hander, quite a few wands from treasure rooms, a few good potions and scrolls). I had an 18 strength, reasonable armor and sufficient food. I was certainly considering this reasonable equipment for a serious attempt at the amulet. Then, while walking through a maze, it simply died. No response for about 15 seconds and then it left me in the shell. It did save my game, so I tried saying "rogue rogue.save". It would restart, but after typing one command, it would do the same thing. I tried this several times, but on the last time (the time I said "oh well, I'll just quit and settle to be number two on the high score list" (I had good luck with some leprachauns), it claimed that the file had been touched and the score wouldn't be recorded. I'm not an irrational type. I've seen people have problems with rogue before, but I would expect that these kinds of problems would be fixed. The machine is a VAX11/750 running Berkely 4.2. The rogue version is 5.3. I belive we are running in compatability mode. I hope this will help diagnose the problem. It is rather frustrating to lose in this manner when doing well. I know some of the rogue authors/maintainers read this list, so I would appreciate a reply if the causes are something that is known (and why it is/isn't fixable). Thank you. I agree with the following. I have experienced many, many times!!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ <is this line really necessary?> Several people, including myself, have mentioned a bug in Rogue 5.3 regarding re-starting saved games, and several other people have posted replies which pooh-pooh the idea. There IS a bug with saving/restoring games, folks! I have often saved/restored a game, so I know how to do it (I use the standard save file name, both to save and restore, and I use the command rogue -r to restart). It has worked dozens of times with Rogue 5.3. The *last* time I tried to restart a game, it brought the map up on the screen, displayed all the stats across the bottom, and then went into a mode where it simply echoed each character I typed back on the screen. After about thirty seconds, it went back to command level, regardless of anything I typed. At this time, it apparently re-saved the game, as I can again restart it, with the same (useless) results. You can make slow progress, though, it apparently does ONE command before re-saving the game. I'm talking about Rogue 5.3 ditributed with Berkeley 4.2, and, of course, the game the restore failed on was a really good one (enchanted 2-handed sword, protected +9 armor, and other goodies). How about it, Rogue authors? Michael Stimac ...hplabs!oliveb!tymix!stimac Tymshare, Inc. Cupertino, CA The Schneids ssc-vax!schneids

For all of you having trouble with games, consider this: Using a slightly cheat-type version of rogue with a +12, +12 two handed, -30 ac, and a packfull of goodies, I postponed a game on level 87. When I tried to re-initiate the game, it just froze. I could do nothing! Upon anilizing (sp. it's late) the saved file, I noticed it was 160,000 bytes. Rogue is only 180,00 bytes and probably could not handle the immense saved file. Also, after the amulet (lvl 35), each monster gets +1 added to their experience level. So on level 87, each monster's experience was x+87. The game does not appreciate having to generate such god-like monsters. AND, with the aid of a wizard's password, I noticed that characters could not be greater than exp. lvl. 26 w/o the game freezing. Depending on your machine size, and your character, extremely powerful rogues will be wiped out almost on purpose.
