[I love my wombat]
I just got done finishing two games of Rogue on our PC
which is almost 5.3. I have a question. I was down on level
11, and I found a scroll which I read a little while later.
When I read it, it responded ' You mace flashed '
(I was wielding my mace the time). It increased it from
a +1, +1 mace to a +2, +2 mace. I thought neat and went along.
A couple of levels down I ran into a wraith sleeping and I wanted
to hit it with one of mine wands, but when I asked for all of
my wands to strike with, it listed the mace as well!!!
The next game, I had a long sword. I ran across the same scroll
and it increased it from a +0, +0 long sword to a +1, +1 long
sword. Again, I thought neato. So, moving along at level 14, I
saw a troll which I thought was sleeping. I had another one
of those scrolls, so I thought ' Ha, I read this scroll and
make my sword better to kick that slimey troll's ass'. As I read the
scroll, it said "Your long sword vanishes in a puff of smoke".
Now, What the HELL is going on here ???
My best guess is that it turns your weapon into a wand
of either fire, striking, or light, or something like that.
reading two of them is bad news though ( The troll ended up
waking up and kick the shit out of me).

There's a scroll in PC-Rogue. "Vorpalize Weapon" or a close eqiuvalent. It gives your weapon +1, +1 and once, you can use it as a staff of slay <one particular type of monster>. Weapons can only be vorpalized (ugh, there's got to be a better verb) once or they blow up. It's a wonderful thing to have, a two-handed sword of Jabberwock slaying. -- The preceding message was brought to you by -- Ray Chen princeton!tilt!chenr

** SPOILER ** SPOILER ** SPOILER ** SPOILER ** SPOILER **
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
What you have encountered is the famous "Vorpalize weapon" scroll.
The enchant weapon scroll raises a weapon hit OR damage by +1,
the vorpalize weapon scroll raises BOTH hit and damage by +1.
The interesting part, which you have unfortunately discovered,
is that reading two vorpalize weapon scrolls on the same
weapon causes "[weapon] vanishes in a flash of smoke" to occur.
Be warned!

If you have a dagger, the second vorpalize weapon scroll does NOT cuase your weapon to vanish. It causes your dagger to vanish. If you have already used a vorpalize weapon scroll early on, and you find a dagger, try to keep it, in case you get another v.w. scroll. Bob Binstock

Vorpolized weapons vanishing in a flash of smoke? Since when? I've
played a lot of 5.3 rogue and NEVER had this happen. I can't even
find it in the code. You can enchant (vorpolize) weapons to your
hearts content, winding up with +3,+4 long swords...
