The best weapon for swinging is definitely the two-handed sword. An unenchanted (i.e. +0,+0) one will cause an average of 10.5 hit points (D&D fans: 3d6) given a hit. The long sword (avg. 5.5 hp) is only slightly better than a mace (5 hp) with the spear and dagger a little less damaging. Of course, these are not the best weapons for launching in one way or another. A crossbow bolt (launched by crossbow--assuming +0,+0 again) which hits can do the same damage as a long sword when it is swung. Not in the same league as the two-handed sword, but you don't have to be next to the monster. An arrow when launched by a short bow can do the same damage as a spear when thrown which averages 3.5 hp given a hit (same as the dagger when jabbed--not thrown). All other possibilities lag behind these. In summary: Swung Launched Two-handed Sword 10.5 Long Sword 5.5 Crossbow bolt Mace 5.0 Spear 4.5 Dagger 3.5 Spear; Arrow Dr. No ihuxx!rjnoe

#R:ihuxx:-17400:uiucdcs:9500011:000:636 uiucdcs!kos Sep 18 15:31:00 1982 I just finished (well, had finished for me, actually) a game in which I had THREE two-handed swords. It certainly does nice damage, but it seems like it is a minus to hit - I had the sword id'ed as a regular +0,+0 sword, but just couldn't seem to hit anything with it. Do you need to have a higher strength to swing it with accuracy, or what? Idea for Ken Arnold: would it be possible to add something like a shield to the game so that using the two-handed sword would offset an AC mod? (Obviously, you could either use the shield and swing a long sword, or not use the shield while swinging a two-handed sword.) Just a thought...

I'm not sure about 5.2, but in 3.6 any strength of 17 or over gives you a hit bonus, up to +3 for 18/100. but what about 5.2, someone? What is the scale for bonuses when your strength jumps 17-18-19...? the Headhunter

Hi, could someone please tell me what exactly the uses of spears and daggers are (other than for throwing), if any ? Are we actually expected to fight with these things (I never do) ? Thanks, Andrew Royappa {decvax,ucbvax,ihnp4,pur-ee}!purdue!avr
