[net.games.rogue] "holiday effect"

geb@cadre.UUCP (05/19/84)

I found out some info about rogue that may explain what I had
called the "holiday effect". Apparently, you start the game
with a set level of "charm". This makes your character such
that it may be lucky in encounters. Once I even had the ability
to see invisible without wearing any rings. This is set at
initialization by a number generated using a combination of
your login name and the date. Thus what is a good day for
one person may not be for the next. Certain days are certainly
much better for rogue playing than others in my experience.

There is no "holiday effect". It's all impressions which people
ascribe to the code in an effort to find a pattern in randomness.

And the person who "had the ability to see invisible without wearing
any rings" had no doubt drunk a potion of see invisible within the
previous X hundred turns (it lasts a while).
