Can anyone out there tell me what the general "ranking" of weapons is? Through experience, I have found out that a +0,+0 two-handed sword is better than a +0,+0 mace. What about some of the other weapons? The manual tells plenty about armor but nothing on weapons. What gives?

The following is from my copy of weapons.c for version 6.5 (a variant of 5.2 (no, I cannot send anyone a copy of the source code since I only have it in hard copy): WEAPON TO HIT DAMAGE Mace 1d3 2d4 Long sword 1d2 1d10 Bow 1d1 1d1 Arrow 1d6 1d1 Dagger 1d4 1d6 Rock 1d4 1d2 Sling 0d0 0d0 2-handed sword 1d2 3d6 Dart 1d3 1d1 Crossbow 1d1 1d1 Crossbow bolt 1d10 1d2 Spear 1d6 1d8 John Hobson AT&T Bell Labs--Naperville, IL ihnp4!iwpba!amigo

I think you are a little confused. From the looks of the weapon rank columns, I would guess that the first column is the amount of damage done when the weapon is thrown, and the second column is the amount of damage done when the weapon is wielded. It doesn't make any sense to say that a weapon has a certain number of dice (e.g. 1D4) "to hit". Hit probability is probably determined by such factors as magical enchantment of weapon, character level, character strength (maybe), and armor class of the monster. This is just a guess based on AD&D experience. Gordon Strong decvax!genrad!mit-eddie!gs GS@MIT-XX

The TO HIT should be DAMAGE IF THROWN, and the DAMAGE column is DAMAGE WHEN SWUNG. -- The preceding message was brought to you by -- Ray Chen princeton!tilt!chenr
