[net.games.rogue] help: making save/restore work

chip@t4test.UUCP (Chip Rosenthal) (05/27/84)

I am having trouble getting the save/restore to work. It looks like
restore() is sending encread() off into never-never land to get 100+
Kbytes (which corresponds to the size of the rogue.save's I'm getting.)
Since I've never seen this function working, I have some two questions
that might help me in my debugging:

	(1) About how big should rogue.save be?
	(2) How long should it take to restore?

Also, I've been poking around a bit and it looks fairly trivial to
disable the save file checking which everybody is complaining about.
Why hasn't anybody done that? Is there something more involved here
which I am overlooking? TIA! (=thanks in advance)

If rogue sources are unavailable, how can people make changes like this?
I also seem to remember seeing other similar notes in this group-
I mean, of people getting in and changing rogue around. I know our people
did it with rogue 5.2, making a "departmental rogue" out of it:

"the qual chairman hits --more--"

"a probing question has weakened you"

To put in interesting messages in place of the ones that come
with rogue, one edits the binary with a debugger.

Lengthy and tedious, but occasionally rewarding....
