[net.games.rogue] Message from merritt@dual: "a superb job"

(I decided I just couldn't let this one go with only a mail reply...)

A ``superb'' job? Now wait just a minute here! I'll grant them a
``good job'' or even perhaps a ``bravo!'', but ``superb''? Never!
How many games have I lost because of some stupid bug in the source?
How many times must I kill a great game because rogue can't figure
out where to put the next monster in the room

? How about the poor guy that was ``killed by God''?

Unless and until I see a rogue that doesn't crash on one out of
five games, I'll hold back on my ``superb''s.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek,

Yeah, rogue's a great game. About the source, though -- I don't want to
rip the originators off, I just want to do my own variations for my
own and my friends' amusement! Since rogue is not sold commercially,
I wish they'd let the source out -- think of all the fun stuff you could
do! (dirty rogue, anyone?) ... surely a suitable acknowledgement to
the original authors could be made in the "Version" command.

Wrong - Rogue is sold commercially, for the IBM-PC. You can
find ads in Byte or similar magazines. The authors of standard
UNIX(tm) Rogue(tm?) adapted it, and renamed any monsters that
would be affected by copyrights for Dungeons and Dragons(tm of
Gary Gygax/TSR Hobbies), which is why the monsters in Rogue 5.3
have weird names.

a superb job eh? have you seen rogue 3.6 sources? id like to get famious
after writing such quality code! :-) but on the nice side, the goodness of
ROGUE is in the IDEA of the game. since you cant get sources, the quality
of the source has less impact. (except for save file bugs, and Fly Traps
that move, and .... )
