[net.games.rogue] I'm confused I think

How does this game work ? I'm a little confused on some of the
more "common knowledge" stuff in rogue. First, I think we have
version 5.something ...now on with my confusion.
Here goes:
	1) I see the term XdY used in connection with rolls,
hits,armor rating,weapons - what is X,d and Y ? I assume that
the higher X & Y are the better off you are but I haven't got
a clue about what the actual meanings are.
	2) Assuming no potions or scrolls have been read, what
is an "it" and/or a "something" ( I keep encountering these things )?
	3) Is the difference between a potion of healing and a
potion of extra healing the speed or the amount of hp's that you recover?
	4) What sort of firepower do you need when face with the
likes of a Black Unicorn ( I seem to get at least two at a time )?

Oh well, that's enough for now, I don't want to discover everything
now. As far as items 2-3 go, I'm not really concerned ( I just thought
I'd put them in since I was already posting ), but item 1 is definitely
a bummer. For instance, is a 0,0 two-handed sword better than a +1,+1
mace - how about compared to a 0,0 mace ? What happens when numbers go
negative ? HEEEELLLLLP!
