[boulder.general] `boulder' will be down several days...

forys@sigi.Colorado.EDU (Jeff Forys) (07/20/88)

We are about to undergo a major reorganization here which will
probably affect some of you. In summary, Boulder.Colorado.EDU
(UUCP name `boulder'), along with sigi.Colorado.EDU will go down,
Wednesday, July 20th at noon. Boulder is expected to return late
Friday night (July 22nd), while Sigi should be back after Sunday.

Boulder is the news and mail gateway, while Sigi has been running
the primary name server for our domain.

WHAT IS HAPPENING:
==================

Boulder.Colorado.EDU is becomming a dedicated News/Mail gateway
into "Colorado.EDU". It will also take over name service duties
for the "Colorado.EDU" domain. There will also be much hardware
swapping going on between both VAXen. Also, Boulder will become
the gateway between our campus backbone, and the Engineering sub-
net (currently, Sigi does this).

WHAT WILL BE AFFECTED:
======================

	1) Name Service for Colorado.EDU will be relying on
	   secondary servers.

	2) UUCP/NNTP connections will be down. I ask that
	   our major feeds (esp. ncar) queue things for us
	   until we are back on our feet.

	3) The Engineering Subnet (and subnets behind it)
	   will be inaccessible.

	4) On-campus remote news readers will not work.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING:
======================

Clearly, we are bored.

Anyway, we hope to have `boulder' back by Friday night. Really.
Would I lie to you?? There'll probably be *some* clean-up work
required before everything is running smoothly again.
