Version 5.3 does have a nymph bug, where having something taken from you by a nymph screws up your inventory. It goes like this: you attack a nymph, and she wins and takes something of yours. Soon after this, you look for something in your pack and its not there. You do an inventory, and there is a gap where things don't line up on the left margin of the inventory list, and there are items missing in the middle. This happens about half the time that a nymph gets you. I call this "getting nymphed". Another guy here, Paul Israel, walked into a big room containing a sleeping nymph on a lower level one day, and somehow happened to drop a hold monster scroll just inside the doorway, so that nobody could get in or out. He then took off everything, dropping it on the ground. He then walked up to the nymph stark naked, not even a weapon in hand, and started pounding away at her. In the meantime, trolls, vampires, etc, were piling up in the doorway. With nothing for the nymph to take, she just stood there while he pounded away at her with his fists. Finally he destroyed her, winning a scroll or something. In retaliation, the game froze completely, not responding to any keypress except <del>, and saying no to "really quit?" didn't help. I don't know if this is related to the main nymph bug, but I thought it was a cute concept. Paul says he was at a barbecue with Ken (author of Rogue) Arnold last weekend, who recently graduated from U C Berkeley and is looking for work. Ken is probably too busy counting the money he makes from selling the IBM PC version of rogue to be interested in coming out with Rogue 5.4, but you can always buy an IBM PC, eh? Yuk yuk, ho ho.
