I also agree with the view that you should wait to read unknown scrolls until you have things to identify. However we have found a nifty bug (feature?) concerning identify scrolls. If yuo know the inventory letter of any wand or staff, *ANY* id scroll will identify it. You have to know the inventory letter, though, because if you ask what can be identified it will only tell you what the scroll asks for (armor, weapons, etc.). This can be quite useful during lower levels when you have several unidentified wands and staffs, and are set otherwise (good armor and weapon). As for when to read scrolls, I too like to read them at the beginning of a level until I find magic mapping. I then read them at the end of levels until I find summon monster. Try it, you'll like it.
