[net.games.rogue] rogue is a reemer

tims@mako.UUCP (Tim Stoehr) (06/11/84)

Why does anyone play this ridiculous game? It's a complete reem-job.
No matter how fantastically lucky you get, which you have to be to get
to level 20, you still get stuck between two phantoms and two black
unicorns, and gee, too bad I used my scare monster scroll when I fought
those five troll two minutes ago, and the other one I burned by reading,
etc. You can't win this mess, and how far you get is dependent on random
chance. I have an idea, if you feel like a game of rogue while your
computer is down, go strap yourself to an anthill and you'll get the
same effect.

I'd like to point out that the game has been won (in all its versions)
a number of times by people all over the country, and that the world you're
trying to use is "ream".

	Thank you.

As someone who has now won 5.3 twice, all I can say is that if you haven't
won, you haven't tried hard enough (and especially long enough). You CAN
win, and one of the real joys of the stupid game is that it is hard enough
that winning is a real ego boost. If I want to win, I'll go cheat at
solitaire. If I want a challenge, I'll go fight rogue.

By the way, I think you will find the word is spelled 'ream'.

One mild correction to the claim that rogue has been one in all its
incarnations: there is the imitation we play here, cbrogue (rumored
to have been developed at Bell Labs in Columbus, Ohio), that nobody
has won so far as I can tell. I've tried several times to contact
anybody who has so I can find out how-to. No luck. It has several
annoying characteristics (notably what monsters appear at what
level) that render conventional strategies void.

If a winner reads this PLEASE mail me!
