[net.games.rogue] scare phantom question

tims@mako.UUCP (Tim Stoehr) (06/19/84)

Can anyone explain what happened? I was on level 16, minding my own business,
when "something" hit me. Naturally, I figure this is a phantom, so I prepare
for a tough fight. The next thing I know, my Hp is 1(62), so I think this
would be a good time to drop my scare monster scroll, which I do. So, I
type "fk", and it says "I see no monster there". OK, can't see phantoms,
fine. Then I type 'k', and it says "you barely miss something." Then I
type 'k' again, but this time I actually move up on the screen, and the
phantom finished me off. Do phantoms, or other monsters, move away from
scare monster scrolls? I'm very certain this is the way it happened, I
have 'tee' output which verifies it.

Phantoms (like those blasted bats) are permanently confused. Therefore,
they will happily run away if they feel like it. This is useful if you
need to run away and rest... they don't follow you quickly.

Phantoms are "slightly-confused"; they do not necessarily move in
the direction most conducive to following you around and bashing you. The
best way to explain this is to note that Bats are somehwat-more-confused,
and really have a hard time following you around.

A number of monsters will move around you if you are standing on
"Scare Monster"; they'll try to get you to step off of it by feinting around
it...Trolls seem to be especially nasty at this.

What seems to have happened to you is due to one of the two of these
phenomena...either the Phantom moved 'cause it was reeling around at random,
or it tried to draw you off the scroll...
