[comp.sys.ti.explorer] Explorer X server

ole@er.sintef.no (Ole-Hjalmar Kristensen) (07/23/90)

We have just installed version 6.0 of then system on our TI Explorer, and
this version includes an X server. As we have not found any window manager
on the Explorer, we have been running the window manager on the same machine
which runs the applications. ( a SUN 4/110) Everything works fine (although a
bit slow), except for one thing: When a window is changed into an icon, it
does not reappear as an icon, but simply disappears ! The processes connected
to the windows do survive, though.
Any suggestions?

We are running the TWM window manager with the Athena widget set and have
version 11.4 of X on the SUN.
The Explorer X server seems to be version 11.3 ( Does anyone know if
an 11.4 version is coming along?)

We have similar problems at our site and people on this newsgroup (Dan
Stenger, Paul Fuqua) have suggested that there are bugs in TI's X-server,
however there are patches available and once you have these patches even
twm works fine.

However, the big problem seems to be to get these patches. After calling
3 times around the world :-) we finally figured out that these patches are
only available if you have full software support. With our kind support we
probably have to wait until the next system release gets shipped out.

Well, its pretty slow anyway - so maybe you want to get something that speaks
X as its mother tongue.

If anybody knows how to get these patches without paying exorbitant amounts of
money please let me know.

Btw, there is a window manager in the public directory - XWM - which works
fine (just basic functions, no frills), we tried it, you might want to check
it out.
