[net.games.rogue] need help on SCROLLS & RINGS

lvisip@uw-june (Vincent Isip) (06/14/84)

How do you use a 'scare monster scroll'? Also, are there other ways
of finding out whether you've got one without reading it or using an
'identify scroll'?

When a scroll doesn't say anything is that the 'create monster scroll'
I've been reading on the 'hints' articles lately?

What does a 'ring of protection' do?

I just recently started playing rogue and I am playing with version 5.3.
Are there other nifty scrolls and magic stuff that deals with monsters
effectively and saves your skin?

PS: is there an RA (Rogue's Anonymous) group I can join? I've been
spending quite a few late nights with this game.

Stand on it; monsters will not hit while you're on it. Dragons will, of
course, flame at you from a distance, though. If you have 5.3 or some
other version with the "move" command; or if you have a full pack, you
can stand on it without picking it up; when the melee is over you can grab
it and use it again later.

I can think of three:
	1) Drag a monster along so that he'll have to step on it to stay with
you...if he avoids the scroll, it's a scare monster. Caveat: bats and phantoms
are "confused" and "slightly confused" and may miss it just 'cause they walk
funny. The lazy way to do this (in a lighted room) is to stand on the other
side of the scroll from a monster and toss an arrow or dart at it to provoke
it to start toward you.
	2) Drop it. It'll turn to dust when you pick it up. Not recommended.
	3) Process of elimination...when you've identified all other scrolls.

> When a scroll doesn't say anything is that the 'create monster scroll'

Could be the "scroll of nothing". "Create monster" makes a monster
right next to you, and he usually hits you next round. "Teleport" doesn't
say anything either, but does zap you somewhere else on the level.

> What does a 'ring of protection' do?

It desceases the chance that a monster will hit you.

Yup...but too numerous to go into here.

`Hold monster' does not say anything; thus, it is not always easy to detect.
People don't often read scrolls in a position where there is a monster to
be held. Blank scrolls usually cause a message indicating that the scroll
seems to be blank...

Well, if you read a scroll of enchant weapon while wielding nothing (rare) or
enchant armor while wearing nothing (a fairly common spaz where R's abound)
you don't get any messages. Otherwise no messages always mean hold monster
(version 5.2).

In 5.2, when you read the hold monster scroll, it says nothing.
In fact, it is the only scroll I know of that says nothing
(there is no 'scroll of nothing' in 5.2).
But, in 5.3, the game says "You feel a strange sense of loss"
(or something like that -- I've been stuck with 5.2 for a few months)

By the way, I wish 5.3 had the "scroll of genocide"...

[a +1 ring of slime-mold detection]

1. Protection effectively improves whatever armor you wear, or corrupts
it if the ring is accursed.

2. If a scroll says nothing and appears to do nothing, it's Hold Monster.
In 5.3 even Hold Monster says something ("You feel a strange
	sense of loss.").
