[comp.sys.ti.explorer] Booting an Mx on Ethernet.

kanna@THINGOL.UTA.EDU (Kanna Rajan) (05/04/91)

I'm trying to boot a u-Explorer on Ethernet and am having
problems. Very simply, when I boot having the Built-in
Appletalk option in the Control Panel, all is well. But when I
try booting with the Ethertalk option on, the machine simply
doesn't know where to get it's namespace files from, even though
they are on a local volume. And as a result, is not able to load
        up its file system.

I initially thought that it picks up the local file server info
from its BOOT namespace which may be disk-saved on to its load
band. But after making the necessary changes and doing a
disk-save it didn't seem to solve the problem and it keeps
giving me a WAIT NFS msg. in the wholine and comes back with a
pop up window which tells me to choose one of 6 options
(changing its name, contact another nameserver, create a new
        namespace etc.).

The reason I need to boot off Ethertalk is that I'm running a
separate (C) application which communicates with an IBM
mainframe. Instead of using Appletalk, I'd like to switch to
        Ethertalk and get faster downloads.

Can anybody out there help ?

Kanna,
It isn't clear from your message if this is what you're trying to do, but
you cannot run MacTCP and the mX at the same time through the EtherTalk
board. Essentially, this means that if you have IP loaded on the mX,
EtherTalk selected in the Network control panel on the Mac, and MacTCP
(or any other TCP/IP-using program) running (or was running) on the Mac, then
either the Mac applications will crash, or the mX will fail in a way
consistent with what you describe (you'd think there'd at least be "You can't
touch this" dialogs instead of fairly random errors).

If you're not trying to use MacTCP (or equiv), then have you tried booting
the Mac with Built-in selected, booting the mX, and then switching to
EtherTalk (thus allowing EtherTalk speed for AppleTalk protocols)? What
versions are you using?
