A strange occurrence the other day. I had almost completed level 3. All that was left was a hidden room, where the stairway obviously was, since it wasn't anywhere else, and there was no other room possible due to the spacing of the existing rooms. I searched and searched and searched, but could not find the door to get into the hidden room. I probably searched each wall that had the potential to reveal a door about 30 times. My only hope was that there was a magic pool in one of the existing rooms. I walked back and forth over it hundreds of times. Finally, it cleared the screen and said something to the effect of: Your game has been saved, and a core image has been dumped. Please send the core image to ... (don't remember the address). Well, the person, who was supposed to use this core image for debugging purposes, didn't exist. Anyway, I resumed the saved game, and continued walking over the pool, hoping it would drop or raise me a level. If it killed me, big deal. I would probably have starved to death eventually anyway, searching for the door. I got the core dump message a second time. Again, I continued the saved game. Finally it said: "You hear a groan" or something like that. It bumped me up to level 2, and I was off and running again. I still haven't figured out why I couldn't get to the stairway. But I know now that if I continue to walk over magic pools that eventually it will do something, albeit the percentage is pretty low. Thought this was an interesting tale. Thanks to those who stuck with this article. -- Mark Tischler ihnp4!ihuxs!tischler

You must have been searching the walls of the level's rooms. It might help to search every square for a teleport trap (to the otherwise inaccessible room) or a trapdoor (to the next level). Mike Musing
