Last month I sent out a warning about Sun Canada shipping bad 3/60
boot PROMs. If you remember, it is claimed that older 3/60's need
new PROMs to boot SunOS 4.0 because it is distributed in QIC-24
format (some have cast doubt on this claim).
Well, last week I finally got a working PROM. I had previously been
shipped four bad PROMs, one at a time. The most surprising part
about this was that after the first two bad ones, Sun had determined
(at my PROMpting) that they had a bad batch. But then they cooked
up another bad batch, and sent one to me without checking. And
another still!
The hardware support person I dealt with at Sun was very friendly
and helpful. But the bottom line is that I still got four bad PROMS,
one at a time.
I certainly got practice changing PROMs. And my socket is nicely
broken in. Oh, and Sun now says they want my large collection of
old PROMs back. Here I thought that they were my compensation for
aggravation.
Remember, 3/60 PROMs differ from other Sun boot PROMs. My new one
claims to be 1.6 (my old one was 1.5).
