-- Folks, this could have been the big one. It was the best game I'd ever played. Nine rations of food. Seven mucus worms (my fruit). Three scrolls of identify. So much magic in my pack I was having trouble picking up everything in the level 12 party room. I was throwing rocks in the dark to hit monsters as a creative pack-lightening exercise. I hit a Vioelt Fungus. After I ran out of rocks and was cleaning out the room I bumped into it. I had plenty of hit points. I was at experience level 12. I had a wand of teleport away. I had a wand of polymorph. No problem. When things looked bad, I would zap it. No sweat. But I had gotten too excited. I forgot to consider this: Violet Fungi soak hit points in a cumulative fashion. I was cut down to 28 hit points. Did I save the game to rethink the situation? No. Did I pause for a moment to do the addition to see what the next strike would take? No. Did I polymorph it? No. Did I teleport it elsewhere to give me a chance to regain my hit points? Of course not. I hit it. I calmly repeat: AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! -- --Bill Buie
