[net.games.rogue] creative use of sleeping monsters

The comments bring to mind a little trick I used to use in versions of rogue
where there was no way to "move" onto an object without picking it up.
When I found a scare monster scroll by trying to coax a monster (that was right
behind me) over the scroll and it wouldn't walk over it (I know this is not
new.), I would dance around it avoiding the monsters thus increasing my
hit points and didn't have to worry about the scroll "waking up" only to
join in with the other monster. I used this scroll dancing mostly after
I had identified (somehow) a scare monster scroll, picked it up, played
a bunch of levels, set it down, killed off a bunch of monsters, and then
got off the scroll. You can't pick it up and I couldn't "move" over it
(no such command), so I would take ugly monsters for walk over to my scroll
where I would dance around a while hitting it when it was safe. This
technique helped me win 3.6 (as did a bunch of others). But now that 5.3 has
the "move", I don't do it any more.

If you happen to know of a sleeping monster that is in a middle of a room,
you can use him to hide from monsters you are running from when you
are low on hit points and do not have any healing potions. Just keep
going around the sleeping monster and the other monster will not be
able to get to you. In the meantime, your hp comes back up. If all
goes well, and no other monsters come to bother you, you should be able to
get another chance of killing the creature.
