[Dedicated to those losing below level 26 and making a fuss out of it :-< ] Folks, this could have been the big one. It was the best game I'd ever played. Two rations of food. One pmiwamaI (my fruit). A scroll entitled "sresol tuoba serac ohw". So much magic in my pack I was having trouble picking up the "%". I couldn't even take the ring I'd found off my finger. I was throwing arrows at monsters because I'd moved onto a scroll and the b*****ds wouldn't hit me. After I had run out of arrows and heard maniacal laughter in the distance I just bumped into a bat. I had plenty of hit points (12 or so). I was at experience level 1. I had a +1 +1 mace. I had +1 ring mail. I had a +0 +1 short bow. I had a cyan potion. No problem. When things looked bad I could read the scroll or quaff the potion or wield the bow and arch, or, when the things came to the worst - run away. No sweat. I tried reading the scroll but my armor got covered in a shimmering gold shield. I dropped it on the floor and picked it up again - but my cache of gold pieces remained unchanged. I threw it at the bat and the blow seemed to have some affect; the bat started hopping all over the floor. I got too excited. I forgot to consider this: cyan potions are not always potions of extra healing (Knowledge acquired through avid reading of net.rogue - I thank you). I quaffed and someone in the program stopped paying his light bills 'cos we got cut off. I ran for a corner and wielded my bow but you mustn't be able to fire a bow when it's dark 'cos nothing happened. The bat just kept on coming. I tried resting to get my hit points back up but the bat rained in blows of great strength and deliberation, pausing sometimes to watch my agony. Even though I was resting my hit points went down to 2. Did I save the game to rethink the situation? No. Did I pause for a moment to to see what the next strike would take? No. Did I try a peace entreaty? No. Did I call it rotten nasty names and insult it's mother and it's mother's mother? No. Did I read over backissues of net.rogue in order to find out how to defeat these awesome beasts?. Of course not. I hit it. And it HIT ME BACK !! I calmly repeat: AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
