The other day I was playing rogue, and as I dropped down from level 1, I was plopped right into the middle of a party room. I tried to boogy out of there but to no avail. Then, out of desperation, I read an unidentified scroll in the hopes that it would be a teleport, and, miracle of miracles, it was. So, I wandered around and finally cleared the monsters out of the party room except for a single bat, and an orc, who kept moving diagonally back and forth between two spots. It looked like this: ########### ----@--- +......| |...*..| |BO.?*.| -------- The bat didn't move, but every time I moved, the orc would just move to the position up and left of the one shown above, and then back again when I moved again. It would make this move about 80% of the times I moved. It didn't move until I made a run for the gold in the middle of the room. Anyone know what's happening here?

Orcs, as we know, head for gold. In this case, the Orc is heading for
the gold in the corner which the Bat happens to be sitting on. Since it
can't get there, it keeps flutterng around desparately in an attempt
to reach it. (It's the same behaviour you see when you are standing on
a scare monster and some poor beastie is trying to attack you.)

The most likely explaination is that there is a pot of gold under the bat and the poor orc can't make up his mind which pot he should run to. Tho why he would try to run to the pot under the bat when the other one is closer is beyond me, so this is possibly a bug. Mark Biggar {allegra,burdvax,cbosgd,hplabs,ihnp4,sdcsvax}!sdcrdcf!markb

I've seen orcs behave that way (move back and forth as if they were trying to get to the square that another monster was on). I think you'll find that the bat is sitting on a pile of gold. Bill Stoll

This is what it looked like: ########### ----@--- +......| With the Orc bopping between positions |1..*..| 1 and 2.... |B2.?*.| -------- Looks to me like the software couldn't decide which gold he wanted to go for or something silly like that. I had a related experience; I walked into a room and saw an Orc crossing it, as if he were going for some gold. Yet there wasn't any gold in the room; he stopped in an empty corner and waited for me. (and I wasn't even carrying any really heavy weapons! :-<) Alex

The latter is true. When a monster is set running, it is told to run and where to run to. In most cases, it is "run at the rogue". However, in the case of the greedy little orcs they might be told to run to a specific pot of gold. Note that this instruction is "run to a specific location", and not "get greedy and run to any pot of gold." In this case, the orc was told to run to some gold sitting underneath the bat. -- Chip Rosenthal, Intel/Santa Clara {idi|intelca|icalqa|imcgpe|kremvax|qubix|ucscc}!t4test!{chip|news}
