I was playing a game recently where I entered a level (level 5 I believe) where no matter how hard I searched (especially in the obvious places) I couldn't find a doorway into an unexplored room. I had to find the hidden room(s) because none of the rooms I did explore contained the %. So I had no way to get to the next level. Out of sheer desparation I started going over every inch of known territory until (quite by accident) I found a trap which thankfully dropped into the next level. What I want to know is this -- Is it possible that a level can have no other way down except via a trapdoor? Or is my example one in which I did not search hard enough for the entrance to the room with the % ? Thanks in advance Warren Lobel

Unless you hit a bug I've never heard of, *EVERY* level has a stairway down. Depending upon which version of Rogue you're playing, it could be in a distinctly non-obvious place; for example, under 5.3, it can be in one of the "mazes". -- Rsk the Wombat UUCP: { decvax, icalqa, ihnp4, inuxc, sequent, uiucdcs } !pur-ee!rsk { decwrl, hplabs, icase, psuvax1, siemens, ucbvax } !purdue!rsk "Now wher're you boys goin' with all that beer?"

There is always a % (may be in a maze), keep searching.

Only once was I convinced that my floor had no stairs. The machine crashed just as the floor was being generated. The crash was soft though, and the game was saved. I returned the next day and started out on the new floor. Three hours later, all the stationary monsters dead, all nine rooms found, (no mazes) I starved to death. The crash is the only reason I could think of for the problem. In short, no. If you don't have stairs somewhere, then as far as I know It's a bug. Brian Atkins UUCP - {allegra|ucbvax}!nbires!atkins USPS - NBI, Inc. 3450 Mitchell Lane P.O. Box 9001 Boulder, CO 80301 ps. did you have any mazes? If so sometimes the stairs are well hidded. Take a close look at the borders of mazes, and the density within that border. I think you can then make some conclusions about if you have found all there is to find in a maze or not.

It may be a remote possibility, I have seen strange things occur in 3.6 like : ----------------------- |.....................| |.....................| ----------------------+ So, things can go wrong - no trapdoor, doors in corners, etc. This unfortuate event happened to me with the doorway leading to the last room on the level that I had not explored. Naturally, the unexplored room contained the trapdoor so there was no way to get there - I had no scrolls of teleport left, or any rings of teleportation - a real bummer. I've played a lot of rogue (5.2 and 5.3) and have never failed to find the staircase. Of course, that doesn't prove anything... Bill Stoll

I searched every damn inch of all the rooms (going through my last three foods and all my scrolls in the process) and finally died of starvation. The only monsters in the six known rooms seemed to be the ones created there (ie, no more showed up after the initial set were killed). The % may well have been there somewhere, but I sure couldn't find it. Trisha the Celtic Soul Sister

In 5.3 (at least), it's possible for corridors to have secret doors. On two occasions I've been unable to find the stairs and have started searching corridors out of desparation. In both cases I've found doors.
