1) In 9.0, if you read a "hold monster" scroll,
the monster will continue to hit you unless
you move away, in which case he will not
follow you, since he is being held. The
advantage to this is that you can regain your
hit points. This is especially useful when
you hold a monster in a corridor who has lots
of other monsters lined up behind him just
waiting to pound on you.
2) In 9.0, you can get more than 10 hit points
when you go up an experience level. I'm not
sure what the maximum is, but I've never seen
anything higher than 15. Maybe someone else
can help out with the exact maximum number.

In 5.3 the monsters don't hit you and if your sandwiched between two in a hall, you can rest up to regain your hit points then take out the easiest one first, as the other will not respond until you hit it. You don't say?? Tell that to my character that got sandwiched between a Snake (polymorphed Dragon) and a Griffen on level 22 in Rogue 5.3 . This comment was with regards to reading a scroll of hold monster???? That's what my reference was to; reading the scroll when sandwiched between two monsters in a hall. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough... Anyway, I've been stuck between a griffen and a Jabberwok[sic?] and successfully used this scroll.
