A fellow gamer swears this happened: He got to the nether regons, about level 17 or 18 with lots of everything, and blammo! The save game bug! Well, he was in the same room as the stairs, so on a whim (it was after working hours) he played the game one step at a time until he eventually got to the stairs. Now here is the interesting part: After going down the stairs THE BUG WENT AWAY!!! How ABOUT that! This was on an 11/750 running 4.2 BSD and 5.3 Rogue. My experience was similar, but not identical. After getting zapped by
the bug, if I fired up the saved game and did an inventory as my
first move, I got several (i.e. more than the normal 1) moves before
the game saved itself again. After I discovered that my escape was
only temporary, I quit, so I can't say whether it would have been
permanent if I had gone down some stairs. It wouldn't surprise me
if it were true, though -- someone else suggested only saving games
when you're sitting on the stairs and then going down them as the
first move of the restored game as a method for avoiding the bug
altogether.
