--More-- I was in a situation once where I could SEE there were no stairs! It was on level 2 or 3, and all the rooms were lit. After exploring the entire level, I started head for the stairs when I realized that there weren't any on my screen. I had found all the rooms, no hidden doors anywhere, etc. Then I remembered an eye I had left alone. I returned to that room, killed the E and the stairs were under it! Merlyn Leroy

I, too, experienced a situation where there were no stairs.
However in my case, I had bumped off all the meanies on that
level and there were still no stairs to be found. What frustrated
me even more, was that some of the little monsters were able to
pop in to play, but I had to sit around and wait for them by
leaning on my space-bar. Such is the life of a rogue, I suppose-).
As for the version of Rogue I was playing, I was able to elicit
the following response when I asked it about it's version number:
"Rogue version 4.R. (mctesq & rer were here)."
