Me too. When I was a wee lad starving my way through a MS at the University of Wisconsin (oh, dear, now I've gone and given away my gender and blown my lovely unisex name :-), I took a job keypunching hydrogen bubble chamber tracks for some research project. I set records for speed and got several raises based on performance. Like any other job, I found it possible to enjoy it and be challenged by it. Sure didn't feel like I was contributing great things to the world of ideas, but it was easy and put groceries on the table. Further aside on names: my S.O. is Terry. When telemarketers call they usually have to begin, "Is this Terry or Dale to whom I'm speaking?" We are also on many mailing lists with the incorrect gender prefix. My favorite was the one that came "For the daughter of Ms Dale Cook" (I have two sons.) Is anyone else bothered by the world's need to presume a gender from a name or situation? -- - Dale N1US VOICE: (617) 486-1343 ARPA: cook@alliant.alliant.com SMAIL: 1 Monarch Drive UUCP: ...linus!alliant!cook Littleton, MA 01460
