[net.games.rogue] Rogue 5.3 below level 26

ab3@pucc-h (Rich Kulawiec) (08/15/84)

Is it just me, or does everyone's Rogue 5.3 start allowing monsters
twice the number of hits below level 26? I.e., all the monsters
	are "hasted".

This, as you might guess, becomes very nasty, even at Str 26 and
	AC 16, and a +4,+6 2-hander.

I like to drink and dance all night,
Comes to a fix, not afraid to fight,
You got that, right?

I've noticed really nasty stuff that goes on below level 26, usually around
level 36. Yes, monsters suddenly are able to take two swipes at you instead
of one, before you get your turn. I have a patched version of rogue that is
exactly the same as standard 5.3, exept that it starts you with +5 leather
armor, a +1,+1 two-handed sword, and guarentees exactly one party room
per level. After going back and forth between level 26 and level 1 a
couple times, I decided to see how far down I could go. With 31 strength,
a +23,+24 two-handed sword, 356 Hp, Ac 54 and exp. level 21/8000001, I
had no problem until level 68. Before that, nothing could touch me at
all except dragon flames and medusa confusions. But on level 68, I met
a dragon who all of the sudden, I couldn't hit. Before I realized what
was happening, I f-keyed him and died, carrying 6 scare monster scrolls,
6 hold monster scrolls, and 5 teleport scrolls. But I shall return.

In our version of rogue, the monsters get twice as many opportunities
to hit once you get below level 29, and party rooms AT level 29 often
contain such monsters. In a cheat version, I had level 60 armor and
+20,+20 two-handed sword --when I got to around level 60 of the dungeon
and quaffed a raise level which took me back to experience level 1,
I couldn't hit anything at all (monster armor classes apparently increase).
I was surrounded by monsters which couldn't hit me, but nor could I
hit them. I also couldn't starve because I had the amulet (and a ring
of slow digestion just for insurance). Maybe this qualifies as a
"strange death"?

Our cheat version is a perverted 5.3 which only gives friendly potions and
scrolls, lots of plate mail and 2-handers, and one party room per level.

It happened to me too, on level thirty i was demolished by a couple
Griffins that were "hasted". Imagine my chagrin when i fell through
two traps after getting the amulet, and formerly being able to demolish
dragons in a few hits...my closest i've come to winning...yet.
