[comp.society.women] Making people think

jmdoyle@phoenix.princeton.edu (Jennifer Mary Doyle) (03/23/89)

All the responses to my previous article reminded me of something. Here at
Princeton, we have student computer consultants who work shifts at the
various computing centers on campus helping users in distress. They are
trained at the main computer center here, and part of their training involves
reading a certain handbook. In the handbook, the default pronoun is *she*.

Admittedly, the overwhelming majority of consultants here are male, but this
forces people to consider the possibility of female consultants too. When it
comes up so often, you have to think about it.

p.s. As soon as email and postings die down, I'll post a list of terms for
"freshman".
