HP also offers an X.400 mail product based on UNIX and MPE/XL. Our UNIX
products offers access to both vanilla UNIX mail and X.400. It is my
understanding that these products are sold as additions to the UNIX based
computers we sell.

As I understand it, X.400 Netnews is an oxymoron, indeed X.400 mailing
lists may also be an oxymoron. Something about all responses,
including replies and nondelivery notifications, going to the same
address. This is based on indirect information, is it correct?

As someone who does know quite a bit about X.400 I am unclear why X.400 mailing
lists or netnews would be an oxymoron. Mailing lists are available as a
standard part of X.400. They are enhanced by using X.500 (Directory). The
later allows one to avoid knowing where a mailing list is based.

BTW X.400mail has the ability to redirect replies.

I havn't thought much on the X.400 Netnews issue however I can't see any reason
that one couldn't use X.400 as the transport medium for Netnews I can think of.
If this is of interest to the internet community, I suspect that one could
design their way out of this issue rather quickly.

I believe the technical problem of X.400 capabilities and availability isn't
the issue. I wonder if anyone has made any *plans* to transition the Net to
X.400?
