With the work in this area nearing completion, the controversy has cooled off a little. At the last joint meeting CCITT almost agreed (but for one dissenting voice) to publish the work as a Draft Recommendation. In ISO, the New Work Item proposal has been forced to a second ballot which will close in June. All the relevant papers were circulated earlier this month by ANSI; this includes the NWI proposal itself plus other related papers. These are: ISO/IEC JTC 1/ SC 18 N2862 Proposal for a New Work Item: MS extensions. (Includes working drafts.) SC 18 N2863 Meeting Report, SC 18 Special Meeting to resolve ballot comments on MS extensions, 6/12/90 Abingdon, UK. SC 18 N2864 UK concerns about MS extensions SC 18 N2865 DIN comments on UK concerns about MS extensions SC 18 N2866 Liaison statement from SC 18/WG 4 (DOA) to SC 18/WG 1, SC 18/ WG 4 (Messaging), CCITT Q18/VII on Messages in DFR SC 18 N2867 DIN comments on Folder (grouping) concept in MS. SC 18 N2868 Liaison statement from SC 18/WG 1 to SC 18/WG 4 (Messaging) on User Requirements for MS extensions. SC 18/WG 4 N1620 Belgian comments on Working Draft for Amendment to ISO/IEC 10021-5 and 10021-7 These papers should be available from your national ISO member body. Anyone with strong opinions on whether or not this work should proceed could assist their ISO national member body in deciding its ballot vote by making these views known to them. Sandy Shaw
