In my experience, users are often unsure between space, dash or nothing between names. Thus, they find it difficult to remember if the name of a person is "Sven Eric" or "Sven-Eric" or "Sveneric". A good name matchning algorithm should thus be able to match these variants against each other. I would not regard it as non-X.400-conformant to have such intelligent name-matching in a system, even if X.400 does not specify equality between names in these three cases.
