> In the recent past there has been a large amount of traffic on the
> problems, both moral and technical, of the SDI project. Many scientists
> all over the world have stated their objections and refused to work on
> the project or accept money from the SDI fund.
>
> In the UK there has been the formation of several groups, based at
> Universities, who are worried about the social consequences of
> computing science. These groups have often been prompted by the
> SDI question although they do not limit themselves to this question.
>
> The group here at Lancaster is interested in areas such as :
>
> SDI
> Women in Computing
> Education
> Health and Safety
> Privacy and Security

The analogous organization in the US is Computer Professionals for
Social Responsibility (CPSR). We have a similar focus and the same
concerns. CPSR has a dozen active chapters around the country, so
there may well be one near you. Contact the national office, PO Box
717, Palo Alto CA 94301, tel. (415)322-3778 for details, or e-mail
to me (the midwest regional co-representative) if you're interested.
(Or even if you're not--I like mail.)
