[net.games.rogue] Bug in rogue?

js2j@mhuxt.UUCP (sonntag) (09/22/84)

I seem to have just encountered a nasty bug in rogue. I found a potion, which
when quaffed made me feel light headed. I also found that I could move through
walls. Some kind of etherealness? Anyway, I was still able to attack monsters
so I didn't mind ---- until I used the 'f' command to move forward until I
encountered something. But, evidently, since I was ethereal(?) I didn't
encounter anything before moving right out of the dungeon, and continuing for-
ever. My screen began to scroll up as it filled with 'U's. This went on
for about 4 or 5 minutes until I got bored and hung up.

Is there some way out of this? What was that potion? Why didn't my character
die of starvation after 5 minutes of full speed movement? Why am I posting
this article?

This is the potion of phasing. It shows up in Advanced Rogue versions.
You don't say what version of rogue you are playing. (Just as a general
note it is helpful to identify your version of rogue when you are asking
for information on a bug or feature.)
The potion of phasing is very valuable for attacking monsters from inside
walls. They can't hit back but they hang around anyway getting hit.
But you do have to be careful not to go wandering off the screen and you do
have to take care to be back in a room or passage when you unphase.

Oh yeah? In our version they take off like a zombie with 10th level
cleric after them. The only way they hang around is if they are blocked
by a bunch of monsters who don't know what's going on. I find phasing
(through potion or spells) to be usefull on maze levels, especially if
you know where all the magic is.
BTW!!!! Where is the amulet????
I got down to level 29 in 7.0 and I did a spell of detect magic to see
where all the magic items where to see if could find it.(I had been
doing this since level 22.) Unless some monster picked it up and hauled
off with it, it wasn't there. It was a good game anyway. (I more than
tripled the previous high score.)
	Still trying to win....
