ram-ashwin@YALE.ARPA (Ashwin Ram) (10/13/88)
GNU Emacs 18.48.0 of Fri Sep 16 1988 on leo.ring.cs.yale.edu (domain/ix) If there is an autosave file for a buffer that is not associated with a file, Emacs will happily clobber it even if the autosave file could potentially contain useful information. E.g., suppose you start composing a mail message and the system crashes (or you kill the *mail* buffer). The #%*mail*# autosave file will be left behind. But the next time you do M-x mail, this file will be clobbered. This seems to be contrary to Emacs's autosave behavior for buffers that are associated with files. (Whether an autosave file should be left behind when you intentionally kill a modified buffer is another issue.) Whenever Emacs creates an autosave file, it should check to see if a file by that name already exists, and query the user if it does. -- Ashwin.
